31 Days of Horror: Day 10 “The Monster Squad”

31 Days 10-01

I had completely forgotten about this movie and really enjoyed watching it again. Every stereotype of monsters is in this movie from monsters don’t have to run, to the costumes, the script, even the car that Dracula drives, which was done I think for comedy effect. There is a lot of comedy mixed in with the horror of the movie and one-liners like, “Wolfman’s got gnards!” this movie has some great special effects considering it was made in 1987, but it sadly has a few cheap ones too. Overall I would call this one a classic for 80’s horror movies and a must see.

The Monster Squad is a silly movie. From beginning to end it never takes itself seriously and that’s not a bad thing. You don’t have to know any lore to laugh at the “bogus” jokes or plot that stretches just over the top. Just enjoy it for what it is. I don’t really consider this essential viewing for the horror genre or a movie that’s worth watching more than once or twice in a lifetime. But hey, it’s still a better Universal Classic Monsters movie than Tom Cruise has made.

This one was really fun, sharing sentiments I agree that it’s a film that doesn’t take itself seriously, but that’s what makes it so good. It doesn’t force a goofy pigeonhole, it does so with ease. Not just enjoyable for kids, but for everyone. Definitely a classic that’ll bw revisted for many months of horror to come.
